Great but expensive! Also a bit about merino wool 5 by .. J. Crouch (Austin, TX)
I bought these for backpacking, but I wear them all the time otherwise.
- Dry
- Good fit
- Moisture wicking
- Cushion!

I've never had a sock with so much cushion before. I've also never had a sock that kept my feet so dry. Even when your feet sweat or you get these wet they dry very quickly. I wear cotton socks a lot and my feet are extremely uncomfortable when they come out of shoes because they're so damp. I never have that problem with these socks.

Only thing is they're so expensive!

Mulesing
---------
Another note - merino wool comes from merino sheep - look it up, they're very strange looking sheep. Because of how their skin folds (it folds a lot, basically like a brain does to create more surface area) they're more susceptible to flystrike - basically it's insects laying eggs inside the sheep usually around the buttocks because of how the feces builds up there due to the excess skin folds and wool. Mulesing is the process of cutting the skin off around the sheep's buttocks to prevent the wool from growing there and thus permanently preventing flystrike. If you watch a video on it, it seems like a pretty painful thing. Much nicer for the sheep to have to deal with than flystrike though.

However, from what I've read, the flystrike problem is mainly only an issue in tropical and subtropical areas. I don't know if the process goes on here in the states (Vermont - where the wool for these socks comes from), but I haven't found any evidence of it like I have for it being done in Australia. I'm not going to say it doesn't happen here because I don't know for sure, but my bet is that it is less necessary due to environment.

Just thought it would be something you may want to consider and research if you're wondering about animal rights relating to wool.

By far my faves... 5 by .. Emily M. (Plymouth, MA United States)
I've purchased and worn Smartwool socks for years, and have found they just don't seem to hold up as well as they used to. I purchased a pair of Smartwools, and a pair of Darn Tough at the exact same time (little over a year ago), and the back of the heel is already wearing away on the Smartwools, but not so on my Darn Toughs! They have held up beautifully - and I am very tough on my footwear. I've since purchased several more pairs, and will not go back! Same price, better quality, and domestically made. You can't go wrong!

Durable as Claimed 5 by .. K. Safdy (Charlotte, NC)
Darn Tough socks are exceptional - the wool is high quality, the stitching is excellent, and they are made in Vermont, USA! These are my favorite socks for backpacking since they wick away sweat in the hot months, keep my feet warm in cold months, and dry quickly when wet. The cushioning is only the bottom of the sock, so it supports the foot without adding extra bulk to other areas of your boot. I have put several hundred miles on these socks and they still function like new.

Pretty Darn Nice 5 by .. new dad in Missoula (Missoula, MT)
I've owned a lot of nice socks from Smartwool, Icebreaker, Bridgedale, Patagonia, etc. and I have to say that I'm impressed with these ones. They are nice and soft, of course, but seem sturdier than some of the others. The Red ones also look a lot nicer in person than the photo suggests.
